Extinction of Madagascar amphibians and Reptiles due to Global Warming

Climate change leading to the global warming is the biggest environmental threat facing the world. New studies of American Museum of Natural History revealed that due to the global warming species have started moving on to the tropical mountains as their habitats have shifted upwards. According to the latest studies it is predicted that three species of amphibians and reptiles that are found in the Madagascar's mountains could go extinct between 2050 and 2100 due to the habitat loss. Presently these species are compensating the habitat loss by moving upslope.

Among 30 species of geckos, chameleons, skinks, and frogs, and controlling for sampling effort, an average shift uphill of 19 to 51 meters (62 to 167 feet) was observed over the decade. When these results were compared with meteorological records and climate change simulations, the movement of animals could be linked to temperature increases of 0.1°C to 0.37°C (0.18°F to 0.67°F) over the same decade, which corresponds to an expected upslope movement of 17 to 74 meters (59 to 243 feet).

The government of Madagascar is currently planning to set aside 10 percent of its landmass for conservation purposes, and previous research by Raxworthy and colleagues published in Science in April used the distribution of 2,300 species of animals to map the areas of this island nation that provide adequate habitat for all species.

The Malagasy government is creating important new reserves and protecting forests. Sadly, however, with a phenomenon like global warming, species will move upslope, and so eventually may still lose all their habitat and go extinct.

Nigeria Next to Kiribati

Life of more than six million Nigerians is on the extinction. Earlier the Kiribati and now the Nigeria. According to the latest reports more than six million Nigerians will submerge very soon if the government fails to deal with the present situation arising because of the sudden dramatic changes in the climatic conditions.

With the total population of 140 million people, Nigeria is spread to the total area of 924,000 square kilometers. According to the latest reports more than the fifth of Nigerians can be under water with a one meter rise in the sea level. And the situation will definitely rise in coming few decades only.

It will be extremely painful for country to experience negative impact of the climate change. It is a bitter reality and it will be good for its people to accept it. It would be highly appreciable if each one of us work towards it and save the earth from further turmoil and devastation.

The migration of people have already started due to the lack of arable land to cultivate or because of the coastal submergence. Little can be done to change the inauspicious effects that developing countries will face in the next few decades. The present situation calls for the growth and development to reduce the vulnerability to the physical impact of climate change. Their president Umaru Yar Adua made the appeal to the multinational companies to work towards mitigating climate change and its impacts. And that is only possible through the reduction of carbon emissions, to achieve low carbon economy and environmental sustainability.

Nigeria alone cannot do anything. There is a need to promote understanding between the countries to protect mother earth. Now the time has come up to human face to the environmental issues. It is time to change their attitude towards the climate change and empower them, to become the active agents of the eco development.

Far Cry

Climate Change has made a deep mark on the environment, and on our life. But still the majority of people especially in the less developed countries hardly know or care about such events. And this innocence biggest problem that we face today. For instance take the example of 5th June, how many of us are aware of the World Environment Day. Or talk about the Earth Day or the Earth Hour.

According to the survey conducted on the World Environment Day in the Capital City of India – New Delhi. Obviously not surprising, nearly 40% of the people even do not have the idea that what actually the climate change is. Half of them have only heard the term, while among those who are aware about it, have done nothing so far to make the difference. They are preoccupied with the topics like year's Budget, this year Government, political situation and inflammation. And atleast I am not amazed at the polling results. In a country where nearly half of the population is below the poverty line, who do not access to the electronic technos like television, can obviously have no idea about such things.

Climate Change threatens to becomes this decades the most burning issue. The day is not far away when the when the food prises will go up, people will starve, there will war on the share of river or the oceans water.

We are happy to be in dark for the climate change or the global warming. We look through these issues as the responsibility of the big business and government, and that is the reason we keep ourself out of it. But sometimes we forget that Planet earth is the common home of all of us. And we all have some responsibilities towards it. Only the science and technology cannot resolve the issue, we should all actively participate in the eco efficient principles and adopt the environmentally friendly technologies.

DHL Eco Initiative

DHL, a leading provider of global express services, tuned off the lights for one hour on World Environment Day (5th June 2008), in order to take the initiative against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced – the climate change. They made the powerful statement by delivering the message about the need for action on climate change. The attempt made by their employees to save the environment was the part of the GoGreen Program that was launched in the earlier this year in April 2008.

DHL commitment to reduce its environment impacts symbolize that each one of us working together, can definitely make the positive impact on the climate change. Building off the program was intended to switching off the lights in all the DHL offices worldwide (UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Middle East and North Africa) that would result in saving of approximately 5.2 metric tons of carbon-di-oxide.

DHL aims of improving carbon efficiency by 30 percent by 2020. The aim is to increase the environment awareness and to inspire business to take practical action to reduce their own carbon footprints as well as promote the responsible use of energy. It encourages its employees to pen down their daily habits in terms of water, electricity, paper etc and adjust to them, to make it more environment friendly company.

John Mullen, CEO of DHL express, is determined to leading the company towards achieving its environmental targets. In his statement he punctuated “As one of the world’s largest and truly global organizations, we recognize the huge impact our employees can have on our environmental footprint. We are supporting our employees in leading a more sustainable life both at work and home. The ‘Lights off’ initiative will help raise consciousness across the entire DHL workforce. Our GoGreen Program is not driven by management philosophy alone, but we believe that each employee can individually help us achieve our targets and we are particularly proud that our staff are so firmly engaged in this program.”

What Can I do ?

Get involved, create a powerful Global Message about climate change. Tell a friend about the climate change

Kids going Green.....

A new global survey has been conducted by New Generations – Cartoon Network's patented Kid's lifestyle research. , which reveals that the majority of children are concerned about the environment issues like global warming and pollution.

The survey says that as much as 54% of kids interviewed and 62 % of the parents feel anxious about global warming. It does not end there. A good 75 % of them are pre disposed to buying eco friendly products.

Though India is not a model nation with respect to environment standards, the country seems to be favorite among kids. The survey says that the 74% of kids chose India as their favorite country. The united states was chosen only by 9%.

Significantly, 25 percent kids want to help curb environment problems and save the endangered species, if they had the power to change the world.
